CCS Tek - Misfit Flash Unboxing and First Look

Misfit flash

The misfit flash is the lower end model of the misfit series but its not lesser in any way but its construction.
The misfit shine is made out of aluminum, where the flash is made of plastic

I was looking for a fitness wearable so when I saw this for a good price, I picked one up and thought I'd review it

The flash is very easy to use. Simply push down on the face and it lights up. First it will show you the clock, then your fitness progress. The clock is interesting. first it lights up the 4 time points (12, 3, 6, 9). then it glows bright which hour it is. then it flashes the minute number. For displaying the progress, it fills up dots around the ring of the face. You can also reverse it so it shows progress then clock in the app.

The app really is where most of the functionality comes from.
In there you can track your activity, calories burned and how much progress you have on your goals for fitness.
It also tracks your sleep - the misfit tracks your motion and heartbeat in conjunction with time and tracks your deep sleep and regular sleep, and then also compares that to your set goal of how much sleep you want

In the app you can set your goals: points for fitness, hours for sleep, and desired weight. Change which device syncs with your app and change settings in your device

It even has a social aspect where you can share your progress and see how other misfit users are doing (anonymous) or your friends on FB, Twitter, linkedin or contacts

Conclusions - the flash is a basic but functional fitness tracker.. with a watch face kind of thrown in there. Its light weight, easy to use, nice to track, and cheap.
But its not quiet as function rich as things like the jawbone, etc. Overall good device for the price.

CCS Tek - Show notes (12/1/14) - w/ YoungFreeRoyal

Saving money on Tech Gifts - Collaboration with Shadoe from Young Free Royal

1 - Buy Online. Amazon/Newegg often have better prices, and sometimes even free shipping. Brick and mortar are only for getting hands on or if you need it RIGHT NOW

2 - buy last years model. Your purchase doesn't have to be brand new. Unless you REALLY need that new feature for work or something important, last years model will probably suffice. And most likely, it is at least a couple hundred dollars cheaper. And sometimes retailers or manufactures will bundle in extra accessories just to sell it so thats even more value for your dollar

3 - Trade in your old Tech. If you aren't using your old technology, you should trade it in at your favorite electronics store. Most stores offer a gift card towards buying something new, or at the very least, you know you are doing good by keeping those things out of the dump and either into the hands of someone who needs it, or being recycled properly.

4 - Sign up for store rewards. If you are already buying something from the store, why not get rewarded from shopping there? Most stores, either brick-and-mortar and online, having some sort of rewards program. For example, BestBuy and Target have cards that give you points for spending money for money off of your next purchase. So instead of blowing it off, look into it, so you can get rewarded for buying stuff you are already going to be getting.

CCS Tek - Show Notes (11/24/14)

AMAZON FIRE TV STICK

The amazon fire tv is the latest addition to the Fire TV lineup.
The cost is $39 with prime and you can add a $30 voice remote for a total of $69

Where specs are concerned, it's basically half of a Fire TV box—it has 1GB of memory, a dual-core processor, and a cheaper remote that doesn't come with voice search. But that's not to say voice search doesn't work with the Fire.
There is an app for the firetv where you can do voice search but currently its only on android

The similarities between it and chrome are interesting
They're similar in terms of what they do (stream content), what they cost ($39 and $35 respectively), and what they are (HDMI sticks). Fire TV just does it a little bit better, thanks to a couple of convenience factors, one being a remote. Chromecast must rely on your phone, tablet, or computer in order to cast stuff to your television, and that works just fine for some.

This literally is a portable firetv. It can even run the same games, apps, and movie sources as its bigger brother. Including services like: Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, low-cost movie rentals, live and on-demand sports, music, photos, games, and more.

SPECS:
Broadcom Capri 28155, dual-core 2xARM A9
8gb storage
1gb ram
VideoCore4 gpu

So whats in the box?
Fire TV Stick
Amazon Fire TV Remote
USB cable and power adapter
HDMI extender cable
2 AAA batteries

Apple Event
6.1mm, "18 percent thinner than the first iPad Air," Apple's Phil Schiller told attendees. "It's the world's thinnest tablet."
Beyond thinning it down even further, Apple's usual suspects of upgrades are on board: The iPad Air 2 has the newest A8 processor and M8 coprocessor, which Schiller said is 12 times more powerful than the original iPad. It's also got a brand-new camera out back: an 8MP iSight camera (f/2.4 aperture) that does 1080p video, burst mode, panorama shots and auto HDR (that takes up a bit less space). The display remains 9.7 inches, which Schiller called "a new Retina display." He also said the new iPad Air 2 has Touch ID, the Home button-based security system that enables logging in via fingerprint. With Touch ID, iPad Air 2 also has Apple Pay, albeit enabled for online purchases only.
Apple's calling "Retina 5K," touting a 5,120 x 2,880 resolution with 67 percent more pixels than 4K.
, there's a quad-core 3.5GHz Intel Core i5 processor that can be upgraded to a 4GHz i7. There's AMD Radeon R9 M290X graphics by default, 8GB RAM, 1TB Fusion Drive and Thunderbolt 2 ports that offer 20 Gbps transfers. For those who need more power, the new desktops can be equipped with your choice of up to 32GB of RAM, AMD Radeon R9 M295X graphics, a 3TB Fusion Drive and 1TB of PCIe flash storage.

#gamergate
Gamergate (sometimes referred to as GamerGate or as a hashtag #gamergate) is a controversy in video game culture which began in August 2014. It concerns ingrained[1] issues of sexism and misogyny in the gaming community, as well as journalistic ethics in the online gaming press, particularly conflicts of interest between video game journalists and developers.[2][3][4][5][6]

The “D”
Tesla is rolling out new all-wheel-drive-equipped versions of its Model S (check out our review of the original here). The top-of-the-line, dual-motor-equipped P85D has a measured 0-60 time of 3.2 seconds, which should put it among the fastest sedans ever when it starts shipping in December. According to Elon Musk, the system is a "huge improvement" that actually adds efficiency over a single motor -- about 10 miles in range per charge. That's apparently because there's no shaft between the front and rear axles, and the motors constantly adjust output so well that the car overcomes the weight of the second engine.

Autopilot: the car knew to stay in lane simply by detecting the white lines, knew to stay within the speed limit by recognizing the posted 25 MPH sign, changed lanes by flicked the turn signal on, and it knew to slow down and stop because the car detected a stopped car in front of it.

Apple Event
So invites are out for the next apple event on Oct 16th.
What will we see there?
A new iPad design with some slimmed buttons and a TouchID sensor
the 27-inch iMac will hopefully finally get a Retina display of its very own
OS X Yosemite launches to the public

Nexus 6
So its been over a year since the last nexus, the nexus 5. Now there are rumors of a new version, the nexus 6.
What is it? Google's sixth iteration of its affordable Nexus line
When is it out? Possibly October 15/16, but going on the Nexus 5 probably October or November
What will it cost? It's likely to start around $349, £300
It will ship with android L, A larger design similiar to the LG G3 or Moto X,
Another interesting thing is that some people have seen a Nexus device with dual speakers like the M8
Now the screen sizes vary. Most people are thinking 5.5” display but some are saying 5.9”
It has a 2.6GHz quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor, 3GB of RAM, Adreno 420 GPU.
What the cameras will be varys but it will probably be 13MP or greater, similiar to the Moto X and maybe even shoot 4K

Also OnePlus One coming soon.

CCS TEK - show notes 9/8/14

iCloud security leak

so this last weekend someone(s) hacked several celebrities icloud accounts and then leaked the nude photos
Aside from however “cool” it maybe to see these photos, the fact they they are out there brings up some big points

1 - a security hole in icloud
2 - lack of privacy
3 - the internet - it will share whatever it wants

Intels new CPUs
So intel had some big launches this week
First of all it launched new “extreme” processesors or Haswell-E on the 2011 x99 chipset.
These CPUs start at 500 at go all the way up to the i7-5960X for $1000
but whats so special?
Well overclocking is insane (over 4.4GHz), 8 physical cores! the most on a desktop,
DDR4 support - great for gaming, video rendering, and more.
But again this is for those who can spend the money or need a more beefy machine for content work.
1k for the chip alone, and then the board and DDR4 ram is also expensive

Intel also released another new series - the M chips (M for mobile) is in an amazing 14 nanometer etching, making it the smallest yet.
This gives intel a powerful yet extremely power efficeint processor as a competitior to ARM
this is going to go into windows and android tablets and PCs coming soon. even using existing hardware, it boosts battery by up to 2 hours

Insane display news
http://www.engadget.com/2014/09/05/dell-5k-ultrasharp-display/
Dell is releasing a new 5k display.
it has an amazing resolution of 5120 2880, or 218 PPI it has 2 16w harmon kardon speakers, 6 usb ports, and a card reader
yet its so powerful, it needs 2 display port 1.2 cords to drive it
and all this for an “affordable” $2500

CCS Tek News - Show Notes (9/1/2014)

Kickstarter king - Coolest Cooler
Two years ago - Pebble set the record for most money raised on kickstarter
But now a new king is crowned. Coolest Cooler.
the project has managed to lure in nearly 50,000 backers and collect a little over $10,424,610 so far, shattering Pebble's previous milestone of $10,266,845.
The cooler is actually pretty cool - it offers a lot including
18v rechargeable blender
removable waterproof bluetooth speaker (looks to be jambox)
A usb charger
LED lights inside the cooler
Gear tie down straps
Cooler divider that doubles as a cutting board
Nice big tires
Storage for plates and silverware
and a bottle opener
This is a pretty cool cooler (haha I know so puny) but in all seriousness I will be interested to see how successful it will be when they start selling publicly after the kick starter.

Instagram - Hyperlapse
So a new crazy in video seems to be slo-mo and hyper lapse (super fast) video clips.
So Instagram decided to capitalize on that by programming their own app - “hyperlapse”
What's interesting is that it uses cropping and your devices gyroscope to do on-the-fly editing to make your hyperlapses super smooth.
It will crop your video, or change the frame rate - whatever it takes to make the video smooth and nice.
Interestingly Microsoft demoed something similar for youtubers to make hyperlapse out of recorded video. But Instagram beat them to the punch and put it in a convenient iphone app to allow easy uploads to instagram.

Amazon buys Twitch?
So late last week and early this week, there was rumors that Google would buy Twitch and make their streaming empire even bigger. But it has not been confirmed that Amazon would actually be buying twitch for an astounding $970 million in cash. The deal is almost finalized after it goes through the legal merger and government approval.
The CEOs of both companies have come out and talked about how happy they are about this merger. Twitch has a new backer so they can do even more. And amazon now has a way to do streaming
As long as amazon doesn't mess with the current Twitch setup, they should be golden. Because you really don't want to tick off millions of gamers - it doesn't end well.
So yeah - it will be exciting to see what Twitch can do with its new Amazon money.
You can follow me on Twitch at Twitch.tv/ccsrazr for some gaming fun.
