CCS Tek Show Notes - 8/18/14

Back to School Tech Guide

with people heading back to school in the next few weeks, Im going to give you a list of top tech things you need for this school year

A laptop.
Now what should buy is going to vary from person to person
If you just need something to take notes, surf the web, and do papers on, then an Ultrabook would be great for you. They are light weight, have great battery life, and typically have a smaller screen 13”avg, and can do everything a normal laptop does. It just sacrifies some raw POWER for battery life. Dell, Asus, and HP all make some great ultrabooks. But ultrabooks can be a bit more expensive in the 500+ range.

If you arent worried about weight and are just looking to save a few pennies, you can get a lower end notebook. These things are going to be full size but also can be a bit more bulky and heavy. Again Dell, HP, as well as ASUS and Toshiba all make great lowend machines. Just make sure you have at least a DUAL CORE processor and at least 4GB of RAM.

IF you are looking to spend a bit more for raw power or sexy appeal, then you cant go wrong with a Macbook Pro. These machines are amazing - the run nice, easy to use, very powerful, and hold their value for a long time. But they do cost a fair amount starting at 1000.
If you want something Windows based, then ASUS ROG notebooks are great for gaming or other performance work

Phone.
Next you are going to need a new Smartphone.
Now personally, I am a big Apple fan and definitely recommend an iPhone.
They are easy to use, have the most Apps, and if you already have an iPod, all your music and apps will transfer over seamlessly. Now apple is releasing new Phones September 9th 2014 so it would pay to wait a couple more weeks.
But if you cant, you are going to be able to get some great deals on the iPhone 5s, the flagship model and a great piece of hardware

If you want to go android there are plenty of options.
My top three picks are the HTC One M8, the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the Nexus 5. These are all great flagship models which will serve you well. Each has their own pros/cons but are still good.
If you are looking to save a bit of money, the Motorola E and Moto X are both great phones for less.

Accessories
Of course you will need some tech accessories
Storage
First you will need portable storage - so a flash drive that is 16GB at least.
The brands I recommend are Corsair and Sandisk - I have had great luck with companies - they make great products with good warranties.

Secondly - an alarm clock/phone dock.
This way you can charge your phone, play music, and (hopefully) wake up on time all from one device.
I am going to include links in  the description below for where you can find iPhone and android models
Backpack
Now your school may provide a backpack for you, but if not, here are some suggestions.
MAKE sure that your laptop will fit in your backpack. Preferably with an inch to spare. If you have a 15” screen make sure the backpack fits 15”+ screens.
Brands I recommend are Targus and Swissgear. Swissgear is a bit more expensive but lasts forever.

------------------------
Gaming
Part of school is relaxing when its over and gaming is a great way to do that.
Of course you have the Xbox one and PS4, but what are some other options.
Well there is the Wii U which is receiving a lot of modern titles as well as Super mario smash bro and zelda games
There is the Shield Tablet and Portable (see video here)
Or you can game on a PC or laptop.

If you want to do it on a laptop there are several options from vendors like Razer, Alienware, Asus ROG, and MSI

Tek News Show Notes - 8/11/14

New oculus rift
New Oculus Rift DK2 is finally here. Hit some delays but its finally shipping to developers and gamers.
DK2 is better in that it has a bunch of IR leds and a camera to better track the headsets position for a more immersive experience.
They also lowered the persistance or the time the image is on the screen. so if you move suddenly you wont have ghosting
this is actually done by using the panel from a samsung galaxy note 3 overclocked to 75hz and giving 1080x960 per eye
better engine integration
better but still not there yet.

Apple News
Apple is going apparently going to be having their big iPhone release event on September 9th
A source that has been reliable in the past pegged this as the date so that means we are less than a month away from the new iPhone 6.
There has been a lot of rumors swirling around this device(s). We know there will be at least 1 if not 2 larger screen devices both running iOS 8

the iPad is also looking to be refreshed but probably wont be announced at the same event as to not overshadow the iPhone.
We should be getting the official word from Apple in the next couple weeks when they invite people so I will update you then.

Navdy
So several auto companys have installed HUDs in their car before, but this company is taking it to a new level in a device that can make any car smarter.
Its called Navdy and its a 5” HUD that does pretty much everything
answers calls, plays music, turn-by-turn, responds to texts and more. It even has a camera that allows you to just use gestures to control things.
It is voice controlled to with siri and google now.
it ties into popular apps like facebook, messages, whatsapp, spotify and more.
And as of right now it only costs $300.

definitely pretty cool.

Tek News - 8/4/2014

Topics
president signs unlocking bill
so a couple years ago congress passed a law that made unlocking cellhpones in the US illegal
but that was thankfully overturned this week with the “Unlocking consumer choice and Wireless Competition act” making it once again legal to unlock phones.
this law was rather lame as it promised fines or even jail time to those who were caught unlocking their phones. Yet this law was very hard to enforce as those who were doing the unlocking anyways are typically people who know what they are doing and how to reverse it if necesssary.
Shield tablet
nvidia came out with a successor to the nvidia shield, which is still sold but now called the shield portable
this new model is an actual 7” tablet but focused on not only providing great tablet experience but also solid gaming performance

Specs
  • NVIDIA Tegra K1 SoC
  • 8-inch "Full HD" screen (1,920 x 1,200, IPS LCD display)
  • Front-facing stereo speakers (think: HTC One)
  • 5MP front- and rear-facing cameras
  • DirectStylus 2
  • 16/32GB of internal storage, expandable by up to 128GB via microSD
  • 802.11a/b/g/n, optional LTE
  • 19.75 Watt-hour Lithium-ion battery
People are still reviewing them but so far the impressions have been pretty good
that being said it isnt for everyone.
the controller is seperate so for most gaming it is going to be just like doing it on any other tablet
except this one can stream and play full desktop titles
the optional controll runs on wifi and works great, but it is another thing to charge and carrry around as opposed to the last model where the screen and controller were one.

macbook pro retinas (13” and 15”) got refreshed
http://www.engadget.com/2014/07/29/apple-macbook-pro-refresh/ All 15-inch MacBook Pro Retinas now have 16GB of RAM standard instead of 8GB, and the priciest model has an optional 1TB PCIe-based SSD. The larger Retina models were also bumped by 200Mhz to the latest 4th Core-i7 CPUs, with the top-liner getting a Core i7-4980HQ which hits the magical 4.0GHz mark. Surprisingly, Apple has stuck with NVIDIA's GeForce GT-750M for its top model with discrete graphics rather than updating to the latest GeForce GT800M series. The upside, however, is that the price for that model has dropped by $100 to $2,499 The minimum amount of memory now available on the entry level 13-inch MacBook Pro has doubled to 8GB, and all 13-inch models also got a 200MHz CPU speed bump. Despite the performance tweaks, Apple has kept the same pricing across the board, apart from the aforementioned discrete graphics model. All of that should keep MacBook Pro fans happy, particularly those grumbling about the meager 4GB of RAM previously in the base models. but these updates were really necessary because upcoming yosemite while being pretty awesome does need more ram to run that buttery smooth that everyone is used to.
